Phi Delta Theta Sponsors Hill
Clean Up - February 23
In an
effort to foster greater partnership and harmony
with the Boulder Hill community, the Phi Delts led teams of fraternity
brothers and neighbors through the streets of University Hill, picking
up trash and making our neighborhood more livable .
Boulder police officer
Brian Rech said the project is welcome. "It's really nice to see one
of our community's great resources (fraternity and sorority houses)
step up and do something positive for this neighborhood," said Rech.
The cleanup precedes the
March unveiling of the new Adopt-A-Block program sponsored by the
University of Colorado Student Union and the city of Boulder, in which
CU's Greek organizations will adopt a street in Boulder and maintain
it, similar to the state's Adopt-A-Highway program. Phi Delta
Theta have adopted a yet-to-be-determined portion of 11th street for
the upcoming year. Thank you PHI DELTS!

Seasonal Trash - Coalition Publishes Final Report -
February 7
A coalition of landlords, UHNA members, Goss Grove neighbors, CU and city staff
have been working throughout this Fall and Winter to find
solutions to the re-occurring problem of trash accumulations during
times of student move-in/move-out. Their
final report will
be presented to Council although no Council action is required.
The group is hopeful however that this report and the group's ongoing
review of their solutions will greatly reduce the amount of trash
lying in our alleys for days during May and August.

Application - November 20 (below article from The Daily
Camera)
Boulders' Beverage Licensing Authority rejected a University Hill
restaurant's application for
a liquor license Monday, with the majority of the board saying the
neighborhood has enough alcohol-serving establishments. Thunderbird
Burgers, 1083 14th St., lost out on its bid for a hotel-restaurant
license to sell beer, wine and spirits when two of three board members
present rejected it. The board has five seats, one of which is vacant,
and one board member was absent.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors - October 27, 2001
Early on a Saturday
morning, members of the University Hill Neighborhood Association
(UHNA) gathered to repair
vandalism to a neighbor's lawn.
The neighbors dug up and re-sod an area of over one hundred
square feet of grass.
"It's heart-warming
to see people coming together to support us," said Tom Irvine, whose
lawn was damaged. "It's been a tough couple of weeks and the Hill
neighbors have been a major source of support." Steven Walsh, who organized the repair work, stated that "it's the
neighborhood that was vandalized, not just this house. The
neighborhood is fixing its own problems."

LRPM Meeting -
October 24. 2001
LRPM is Landlords for Responsible Property Management,
a group consisting of realty professionals, UHNA members, students, a
tenant rep, and city staff (Jerry Gordon and Mo Rait).
This third meeting for the group was a study session that
continued a discussion of the three rental ordinances currently being
proposed. In this meeting the Written Disclose ordinance
was the focus of attention. The group reports making
good progress and all are in agreement that this particular ordinance can be a good tool

disclosures requirement.

Pan-Hellenic Engagement - October
24, 2001
In the interest of addressing safety issues on the Hill, approximately
70 members of the Pan-Hellenic society met with members of UHNA to
discuss a coordinated neighborhood watch. A dozen members of the
sororities have signed-up to help be the eyes and ears of the Boulder
PD and make the Hill a safer place.
- RJ Sentencing Circle - October 23, 2001
Four UHNA members met with approximately 10 Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers, their
chapter advisor, and Loree Greco of the
Municipal Court to participate in a sentencing circle. The
fraternity had been found guilty of disturbing the quiet enjoyment of a
community member's home this summer. The sentence, which could have included $1,000
in fines and 90 days in jail, resulted in the fraternity brothers
developing a "working document" that will become a blueprint for
responsible living among their neighbors. In addition UHNA
members have committed to helping the fraternity work with the city to
alleviate their parking problems.
